This seems to only be a sporadic problem which is why it took so long to respond, but using "as string" seems to have solved it.

Chris There was significant discussion about this last fall some time, but I think the solution was to add one of "as plain text" or "as <<class utf8>>" to the "write" lines if the script is creating text files. I was recently trying to remember which of those was the preferred solution, but haven't had a chance to go archive-diving.
Use "as string".
