For all its quirks, AppleScript is a great language. The main source of confusion/frustration is that things that work one way in one place work differently (or not at all) in another. Much of this inconsistency is not the fault of the core implementation, but is attributable to the disparate sophistication of application terminologies. Apple has no control over this, but users don't necessarily understand that the language itself is not to blame.
Consider: Although Finder's AppleScript implementation has a few holes, it has the most amazing filtered-reference implementation of any application I know. Throw it any 'whose' clause that you can think of, and the chances are you'll get the expected result. Try similar things with other applications, however, and you're likely to get errors instead of results.

By all means, do not feel constrained when answering. I'd like to hear suggestions for how to fix the language, too.
