Trying to help a correspondant, I try to write a handler able to

This may be an additional step or two, but have you tried setting up a
quartz filter that does the compression, then opening the file in preview
and GUI scripting Preview's "Save as PDF" which allows direct access to the
quartz filters?

Thanks.

As I am running under 10.4.11 I never needed to use this process.
As the "compressed PDF" option is unavailable with 10.5, I would have perhaps tried to do that.

I like this scheme because it requires only "in_the_box" tools.
