Following up on Axel's comment on "dsmemberutil," you may want to check out
the following quick article:

It's preferable to "id" on Mac OS X (with its multi-layered directory
services architecture) and generally provides more relevant information,
especially if you just want a yes/no response for membership in a specific
group.

Roughly equivalent functionality is available in Tiger with the
"dseditgroup" command.
