I know that's what he meant, but if the OP needs to do the job with
Applescript that won't help. It's not a matter of fun; it's a matter
of it being one part of a job that the script does.
By using smart mailboxes, the user has to set up the smart mailbox,
then use the script to access the messages in the smart mailbox to do
whatever processing the script needs to do.
