The umlaut connection is visible in the similarity
between o and ö, but even there they are, as I said, considered to be
separate letters.

Very much so, in Swedish they also have different positions in the alphabet and thus affect sorting etc ('o' has the normal position in ascii table while 'ö' is the last letter of the alphabet)
