That's actually correct, and it's 64 bit color (or 16, if you count
one color plane at at time)
R,G,B,A are the color planes that are addressed.
It is true that the gamut of most monitors does not cover every one of
these colors, and indeed, the biggest apple monitor only has 4096000
pixels.
However, visible banding artifacts will occur at lower bit depths, so
these fidelity is necessary for even basic TV and film work.

You've got to be kidding. 48-bit color?! That's 281.5 *trillion*
colors. Given that a computer monitor can only display about a million
colors that the human eye can tell apart, 24-bit color is already
overkill. 48 is just ridiculous..
