AppleScript to reflect status in dock icon

Is there a way for an applescript (e.g. an idle script) to reflect it's status by changing it's icon in the dock?
I want to create a small script that checks a certain status and changes the icon in the dock to a greenish or a redish version, depending on the result of the check.
