Thanks for everyone's help understanding the strange Finder behaviour. I still think it's a bug, but I have a glimmer of an understanding of what the Finder is thinking. Plus I have a good workaround now.

It appears to be treating "every window" as the complete tree structure underneath the window. By that logic "name of every window" would give the name of every item in every folder nested within the window.

The explanation of the orphan statement "set Window1Name to name of window 1" is that I was modifying a script that is bound to a hot key that closes all but the frontmost Finder window. I find this very useful.
