I'd like to claim I somehow anticipated this problem, but actually I did use Image Events in my first version of the script, and only went to the shell script after I found out that Image Events did not let me control the quality setting of a JPEG output. I too prefer to use the steering wheel rather than reaching under the car to grab the tie rods.

Well, I'd guess that depends on whether the problem is with SIPS
itself or just with AppleScript Image Events. But unless you
anticipated the Leopard issue, why would you do that in the first
place? Calling out to the shell interface from AS instead of using
Image Events directly seems kinda roundabout...
