Probably.
But first, he doesn't have to open AirPort Utility, which is an application
in the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder. Instead, he can
configure System Preferences so that his computer always shows AirPort
status in his menu bar. He would do this by launching System Preferences,
choosing the Network pane, selecting AirPort in the pane on the left, and
checking "Show AirPort status in menu bar." From then on, whenever he wants
to join his friend's network, he need only choose Join Other Network from
the AirPort menu in his menu bar. A small window will appear where he can
enter the network name and password, and he will be connected.
To do this with AppleScript in Leopard, you are supposed to be able to use
the new Network Preferences Suite of the System Events application. The
System Events application is in the CoreServices folder, in the Library
folder of the System folder; drop its icon on Script Editor to see its
dictionary. However, I can't make it work after an hour of fiddling with it.
Perhaps this is because my AirPort network is hidden, too?
You should also be able to do it with GUI Scripting, but I'll have to leave
that as an exercise for you or others because I've run out of time this
morning.
