So what's a suitable hammer for an AppleScript scripter?

I did one job a while back using System Events, and the client says it's
wonderful but just too slow. When I went to look at it again, I was in
Leopard and it just failed. The scripting additions I've looked at either
failed to what I needed or just failed in Leopard.

(As an aside, surely System Events must be one of the greatest pieces of
hit-and-miss software ever...)
