You need to set the read bit as well. And tcsh will run .tcshrc in
such a case, but not .login, which is usually where path setup goes.
Ditto bash with .bashrc instead of .(bash_)profile. Ksh will source
the value of $ENV if set, but not .profile. Etc etc.
