Leopard Applescript Changes?

I just upgraded to 10.5.  When running an applescript that I wrote in 10.3, I found something peculiar:

set theCount to count text items of ""
log theCount

In 10.3, theCount --> 0
In 10.5, theCount --> 1

Can anyone explain this?  Has Apple changed some fundamentals in Applescript?
