Install in Dock

  • Subject: Install in Dock

I just had an interesting conversation via email, with my sister. She recently got a new iMac with Leopard and I asked her to use my software, read its documentation and let me know what she thinks. At this point, you have to understand her point of view, namely: A Mac is a magic box that lets her do email, surf the web and write documents; Run Software Update? "Why? My Mac is running perfectly."

The documentation for the software gives detailed instructions for Dock installation, but she dragged the wrong icon to the Doc, then said "I did somehow get that once but then it went away and it hasn't come back; it's no longer in the User/Library/Application Support folder". I think she had the wrong Application Support folder open. Her reply to my reply indicates that she has probably fixed her problem. We'll see.

The Dock used to be a simple, straightforward feature. It's so complicated in Leopard that I have to write a whole paragraph explaining what to do and why. And to a non-technical user it probably looks like tedious gibberish.

One solution I considered is to simply have my application automatically install the correct icon in the Dock already set to function as a menu. So ... I open the com.apple.dock.plist preference file with Property List Editor. I don't think this is going to be easy to do. I guess I will have to experiment, however. And can I do it reliably? I'm not sure. (Has anyone done this?)

Two recommendations to Apple:
1. Simplify the Dock. Folder menus should be the default behavior.
2. Make the Dock scriptable. I should be able, via an AppleScript, to put a folder into the Dock and set its behavior to Display as Folder and View contents as List. (This is my default. If the user wants to access the folder menu via DragThing or the Script menu or some other arrangement, they can simply 'Remove from Dock'.)
