I can't answer this directly but I use "Mail Act-on" to color the
message Subjects for exactly the same reason. I simply have to press
[ctrl] plus a letter that represents the color I want. See

The download is already able to color subject lines red. It's a
simple matter to add other colors to keys.
I use [ctrl] r = red
[ctrl] u = blue
[ctrl] b = black
[ctrl] y = yellow
etc.
