Thanks, Shane. At first, on try this, I was afraid that I could only access the text content without formatting, but I see that I can get or set all the properties I need from any portion of the text content so that's very good.
So now, an ancillary question, which might be better asked with a new topic, but here goes anyway:
How can you access the anchored content (frame, line or group) that is referenced by an anchored object marker in a text flow. In other words, if I can determine that the third character of a paragraph is an anchored object marker, how can I get a reference to the anchored object?
