Thank you, Philip. I had my problem user check this out and indeed
it ends in a slash as expected. I changed all my scripts to use this.
I still wonder what's wrong with his Finder, though.
###
His System Profile looks like that of a regular MacBook Pro to me:
Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B07
SMC Version: 1.12f5
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33)
Kernel Version: Darwin 9.5.0
Time since boot: 2:22

I've seen several remarks (some of them from Apple folks) which
indicate MBP's are slightly different beasts. However, since I don't
have one, I'm unfamiliar with the exact details. FWIW, when I tested
with 10.5.5/9F33 on my Mac mini, the Finder call worked as expected.
It seems highly unlikely a third party OSAX or even one of those low
level Unsanity products would affect this particular call to the Finder.
