I thought that AS had a 'contains' function where I could say something like:

if myVariable contains ".txt"
display dialog "oh no!"
end if

But I think I must be mistaken, how can I accomplish this?

It works just as you wrote it, with a text or string variable.  How is "myvariable" defined in your script?
