This works:
info for file "Dora:Users:michelle:Desktop:LD.gif"

So does this:
info for alias "Dora:Users:michelle:Desktop:LD.gif"

This fails, as it should:
info for "Dora:Users:michelle:Desktop:LD.gif"

This, however, returns info about the startup disk:
info for "/Users/michelle/Desktop/LD.gif"

And these say the file wasn't found:
info for alias "/Users/michelle/Desktop/LD.gif"
info for file "/Users/michelle/Desktop/LD.gif"
