Attaching to a shared folder on Windows 2003 Server from a MacBook

I can't understand why there is so little information on this particular issue and yet there are hundreds, if not thousands of links when one does a search on "mount a volume".

I am new to Apple even though I owned one of the original MACs, yeah, the one with the signatures of the development team.

I have returned to the MAC after many years in the PC "business".

I am a network administrator in a small K-8 independent school where logon scripts are pretty much routine. One of the MOST routine functions of my login scripts is to map a shared network folder on my Windows 2003 server to my users computers, so they can access their network folder and network resources.

I have attempted to find a way to do this with the new cart of MacBooks we bought recently but, so far, have found nothing definitive on how to do it.

It seems to me, and I may be totally off base here, remember I've been influenced by the PC world, that there should be a simple way to:

1. Take a users logon credentials (I have the MacBooks integrated into my Active Directory),
2. Using the %username% and %password% obtained from the user logon above
3. Go out and find the \\servername\%username% (It's a shared folder on the network, albeit hidden) folder and either put an alias on the desktop or mount it in the Finder
4. Oh yeah, since the user has already authenticated to the network, he/she should NOT have to re-enter his/her password, but
5. That wouldn't be the end of the world if they had to do that

Is this NOT possible in the Apple OS? (Using the latest version of OSX + latest updates)

I'm beginning to believe that while an individual might be able to do that manually, it's impossible to script it?

Is that a limitation of OSX? Applescript? Windows AD?

Seems to me such a common issue in the Windows world would have a similar solution in the MAC world. What am I missing?
