This might at least give some idea of what's happening:

'ascr'\'tell'{ '----':'psn '("Finder") }
    'core'\'doex'{ '----':'obj '{ 'form':'name', 'want':'psxf',
'seld':'utxt'("/Users/shane/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/com.shirtpocket.la
stVolumeList"), 'from':'null'() }, &'csig':65536 }
    'core'\'doex'{
'----':'furl'("file://localhost/Users/shane/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/co
m.shirtpocket.lastVolumeList"), &'subj':'null'(), &'csig':65536 }

Looks to me that the Finder is getting passed the file object in the second
case, but in the first is looking for a POSIX file as some object of its
own.
