Time Machine does mount the disk. The icon sits on the desktop while the backup occurs, which is a handy way of knowing the backup is happening.

Question: While Time Machine is backing up, is there a disk mounted on the desktop from a .sparsebundle file?

If not, then perhaps there is a way to write to a sparsebundle file without mounting its disk. (?)
