Yes. And BTW this is in 10.5.8.

What happens when just re-launching the Finder? 

Haven't tried that, yet.

Do you run the script in Script Editor? If yes, does quitting then re-starting Script Editor have some beneficial effect? 

It's always run as an application bundle.
