Okay a little update, I set formatting to defaults, though I haven't ever changed them so they should have been set to default, I wrote tell application "ical" to activate. My editor looks like this

then I compile and it shows: tell application "ical" to activate. I click run and it runs, so I guess its not completely broke, I just cant see what I am typing until I compile. Any other ideas?
