Just by chance, I was saving a Mail document as a pdf, when I read the latest postings on this.
I tried using cupsfilter from the Terminal, just to see what would happen. I didn't like the results, but I did take a look at the man page, where I noticed ...

       -j job-id[,N]
            Converts document N from the specified job. If N is omitted, docu-
            ment 1 is converted.

I haven't the slightest idea what this is trying to say. What is a job?
