What is this inconsistency of what you speak? IME mkdir traverses the
link and creates the new directory in the target. That would seem to
be the correct behavior. We certainly don't want to remove the link
and create a new directory in its place that's empty except for the
new dir being created...
Anyway, how do you propose to solve it by going one level at a time?
It seems you get exactly the same behavior unless you insert an
explicit test for symbolic links.
