You’re right, if one worked, the other would generate an error at runtime.

But that’s not the issue. It won’t even compile.  The script was working with “... File newGridFile...”

But since it won’t compile, so I get to have  the runtime errors.

Since it’s a compile error I was trying variations on the command to see what would compile and what wouldn’t.

Both of those should compile.

I’m on Tiger:  10.4.11
