Mail's Sent Messages

While scripting for Mail, I noticed that:
1. The Sent mailbox contains a sub-mailbox with the name of my me.com
account;
2. The mailbox group with the name of my me.com account contains a
Sent Messages mailbox.
Does anyone know the difference between these mailboxes?
(Perhaps it has something to do with the "Store sent messages on the
server" mailbox behavior. Mine is unchecked ... and I've never noticed
any messages in 2.)
