I should clarify something about Mail's preferences. If you change a Mailbox Behavior via an AppleScript command or via Mail's Get Account Info (Command-I), the change is NOT saved to the preferences. You have to use mail's Preferences/Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors, then click Save.

This could be dangerous for a user (like me), because the Get Account Info dialog does NOT warn you that you are not really changing a preference. And some of the changes you can make there cause Mail to give a confusing response. This was the subject of my recent bug report.
