Is it possible to set the contents of the clipboard to a variable (to be pasted/added later in a script)? I can't seem to work out how to do this.

Yes. In this example, which I ran from Script Editor, the | represents the place where I placed the cursor so as to paste where I wanted it.

set the clipboard to "bob"
tell application "System Events" to tell application process "Script Editor"
keystroke "v" using {command down}
end tell
