Trigger event on sound input level threshold?

I know this is along shot, but is there any way that I can monitor the current sound input level in AS and trigger an event when a certain threshold is reached?

I thought there was a way of triggering an audio recording to start automatically in QT Pro but apparently not, I'm sure I've seen that functionality in something somewhere. I could then possibly trigger an event based on the fact a new file had just been created.

Failing that, I looked at UI Element scripting but the input level feedback bar in both QT and in System Preferences doesn't seem to change status as the level changes. So then I looked at trying to get the colour of the pixel at a certain point in the bar but came up with nothing.

I'm guessing this is something that can only be done in Obj-C but if you know better I'd love to hear about it.
Cheers
Lee
