Why bother when -

delay 30

is a lot simpler to write

Up to 10.4.3, the delay command had a surprisingly very heavy CPU load.
Even with the additional improvements that came with 10.5, it still has a noticeable load, when compared to idle handlers or the sleep binary (or some shell's equivalent built-in).
As a result, depending on the OS version and/or the criteria considered for comparing various means to pause a script, the delay command may appear as an inferior choice.



and doesn't need to spawn a shell.

And that's of course one criterion to be taken into account... ;-)
