I confess I didn't get the joke either. I thought Jon was saying in earnest
that in Australia -- being a modern, multi-cultural English-speaking nation
-- there is a requirement to be able to accurately and consistently
represent umlauts, accents and various other "exotic" characters in order to
correctly print and display things like name's and places or movie and book
titles from around the world, just as we do in the US.
But now I get it.
