Get selected text in Apple Mail?

I've done extensive googling and searching of these lists, and all of the results I've found for getting the selected text in Apple Mail seems to point to "it's not really possible".

Most of these results date back to 2004, however - is this situation still the same now, or is there now a way to grab the selected text in Mail without jumping through GUI scripting?
