Folder Icons

  • Subject: Folder Icons

If I give a folder a custom icon via copy & paste in the Get Info window, I get an invisible "Icon" (followed by return) file within the folder having a generic icon, Kind = Finder.app document, Open With = Finder.app and kMDItemFSHasCustomIcon = 1. I have no idea what the format of the "Icon" is.

I have also noticed that there exist other folders having a custom icon which use a different method: there is both an "Icon" file and a ".VolumeIcon.icns" file. (I think this was created by copying a disk image.)

I have searched, but found no documentation on exactly how custom folder icons work.

Can anyone point me to a good document?
