Definitely something more esoteric.

Apple does not support any debugging of AppleScript.  Not in Script Editor or AppleScript Studio.

Debugging is only provided by Script Debugger, a third party product you've already stated you do not want to know about, which makes this whole message somewhat pointless at this point.
