I write children's books focused on learning English as a foreign language, and I'm constrained by word lists made up by scholars. I write a paragraph, copy it, and compare the words in it against a base-word list (residing on disk). Then I modify my vocabulary if necessary. Simple scripting problem—for scripters.

Thinking I could figure out the problem myself, I resisted for a long time coming to this list and approaching the altar of Scripting Genius. But I'm glad I did. You guys are bunch of know-it-alls, truly. ;)

Thanks to all who responded, especially Chris Stone, who showed me how to load the text-file word lists, and Thomas Fischer, who pointed me to Smile's Satimage.osax and its "exclude items" addition (fast and spiffy—thanks Emmanuel).
