I am finding out the same thing.

Applescript is interesting. It allows you to do stuff that no one would every want to do but stuff that would be really nice to have it is not possible.

According to the AS dictionary: search v : search a playlist for tracks matching the search string. Identical to entering search text in the Search field in iTunes.

If the search was identical then the only songs that would be visible, and therefor the only songs that would play, would be the ones that were searched.

So far I can get the artist to play if I turn off shuffle but once it hits the end of those artists songs it moves on to the next artist.

You can't make iTunes play an arbitary list of songs via AppleScript. You need to make that a list of songs somewhere in the iTunes interface first and then play that list.

Yep, I was just about to post this. I tried to do something similar way back when I was writing my iTunes shell script and it's just not possible.

iTunes can only play two things, a playlist or a single track; you cannot feed it a list of tracks and expect it to do anything with it.

And at least at the time, the process of creating a playlist, selecting the playlist, playing the playlist, and then deleting the playlist was too cumbersome for my uses.
