- Thread-topic: Resolving an alias
We often have macs with the same name for their hard drive, usually
something like "Macintosh HD"
If I use a posix path, and refer to a file on "Macintosh HD" on mac A, then
later, when Mac B's HD is mounted, the posix path will resolve to the file
on Mac B, which is probably not desirable. An alias will not get confused.
Similarly, if the drives are mounted in a different order in two different
sessions, the unix volume name mapping will get confused.
Aliases keep those straight.
>>> If I had to use aliases, I would have to ask to some app (such as Finder) to
provide me with an alias for the file named "somefile" in the alias-which-works:
that's a call to an app for each path you need.
Generally, in AppleScript, asking applications is not a problem. That's
pretty much what appleScript is for.
I'm not disagreeing that there are some advantages to using posix paths, but
there are also situations where Alias works well too, and the alias class is
used in many ways throughout AppleScript. A knee-jerk reaction to always use
Posix is probably not the best strategy.
The OP seemed a bit confused about using aliases. Was he describing
resolving the alias (class) that results when you drop aliases (files) on a
droplet?
