Not that I know what occurred, but the contents of the screenshot does not look like an encoding oddity, more like reading compiled code.

Most people save their scripts as .scpt - compiled Scripts, or as
applications, which nowadays means as bundles.

How is it you have it saved as an .applescript (as Text)?
