Noticed posts about some recent buggishness in SL and add the
following observations regarding FolderActions:
1. On my second boot into SL the contextual menu item about
attaching a folder action had disappeared and has not reappeared...
what to do, what to do?
2. Only thing left of the AppleScript Utility is FolderActions SetUp
which is hidden I discovered down in /System/Library/CoreServices/.
Does all this indicate Apple is deprecating FolderActions? I for one
have found them very useful. What are they going to be replaced by?
No, they're perfectly alive and well, we just changed how you get to
the configuration interface. It's now using the Services architecture
to add the contextual menu item: when you control-click on a folder in
Finder, you should see an item "Folder Actions Setup...". Pick that,
and it will launch the application and give you a choice of actions to
attach to that folder. You're not expected to launch the application
yourself, hence it being located in /System/Library/CoreServices, but
you can if you want to.
Since the Folder Actions menu item is Services-based now, it's
possible to turn it off so you'll never see it -- see the Services
Preferences panel (get to it from the Services menu, or System
Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts).
3. I have a set of FA's developed back in Jaguar that have needed a
bit of care and feeding through Tiger but worked fine straight
across into Leopard but are really erratic in SL. There are about 6
steps in each FA that when called either don't activate at all, or
perform 2, 4, or all the steps with no consistency on repeat
execution. Sometimes it is as if FA goes deaf to several tries and
then kicks in again.
File a bug, please, and attach the folder actions if you can.
4. Lots of error -10004s show up even when targeting some of the
applications so it looks like a major rewrite is in order, right?
How are multiple applications to be targeted in the development
process within the script? It does appear to be almost impossible to
develop the handlers within ScriptEditor because the Editor keeps
getting in the way and bringing up the -10004s, is this so?
There isn't nearly enough information here for me to tell you anything
useful. Which application(s)? What operations? (Probably best to
answer that offline.)
