Yes, that about drove me nuts as well.  The issue seems to appear when
using Xcode and the AppleScript Editor at the same time. It might be related
to the two applications trying to access the same formatting preferences file.

I wound up making the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.applescript.plist
file read only (after making a copy, of course).

and then yesterday, when I opened a script in AppleScript Editor, the  
ugly default settings were once again in effect. So I reset all the  
values but today, they are all lost again.
