If you are speaking about binaries, then you'll need one that has been compiled for Mac OS X. On the other hand, you may want to compile from the source code yourself. I guess you'll have to download the p7zip_9.04_src_all.tar.bz2 tarball, not the p7zip_9.04_x86_linux_bin.tar.bz2 tarball, since Mac OS X is Unix-based (i.e. a BSD/FreeBSD flavor).
Thanks for the info. I will do this when compiled file is not available.
Or do you want to recommend me some other free command line utility to compress/decompress files?
It depends on the archive formats you are interested in; p7zip seems to be rather versatile from that point of view. On the other hand, Mac OS X comes natively with various utilities allowing to handle some formats; to name some of them: zip, pkzip, gz, bz2, tar, cpio, cpgz, dmg.
I am not really comfortable with shell scripting and I don't enjoy it like applescript. So I want to use one utility and stick to it. That is why I asked for an opinion. I am not concerned about formats. Any format will do. For opening the archives, I am going to use a GUI software. Hopefully, p7zip is a good choice for creating archives. It will be really time-consuming to switch. Many thanks Axel for the help.
