check alias

I want an alternative way to check alias (but not using Finder)

try ---1
ifile as alias

try --2
------.
end try

try --3
----
end try
--------
on error e
--do this

end try

I have noticed that even if an error occurs due to the second and third try blocks, the "on error" is initiated. I thought try blocks with no "on error" were supposed to suppress errors. Now, I see that they only suppress errors from being viewed by the user.
