My script creates a sparsebundle disk image file with indexing enabled and never disables indexing. The script's usual operation is to: mount the disk; write disk; unmount disk. Snow Leopard. The disk contains 2.68 GB of 4.7 GB capacity.
I've notice a some odd things.
1. The disk, if mounted manually, indicates that it is "preparing" to index, but never actually indexes the disk. Repeated clicking of the Spotlight menu item will cause the item to lock in an inoperative state and I have to restart.
2. Today, I tried a Spotlight search on a folder in the disk. A list of found items appeared, disappeared, appeared, disappeared, appeared, disappeared, ...
3. I used 'mdutil' to check the index status (it's on) and finally used 'mdutil -E ...' to erase the local store from the disk. When I re-enabled indexing, the index was rebuilt in an amazingly short time.
I tried my search again and it worked properly. When mounted, the disk no longer indicates that it's indexing.
Perhaps some of you are Spotlight experts and can explain what's happening here.
