Calendars

It's easy to change the calendar for an iCal event (say from calendar A to calendar B) by hand in iCal. Is it possible to script this action?
I thought of simply making a copy of the event's properties and all of its elements, then using them to create a new event on calendar B, then destroying the event on calendar A. But I notice that elements of an event, "display alarms" for example, themselves reference a calendar, so I'm worried about creating logical tangles.
Thanks for any help,
