Ah, it's the extra quotes!

Without using the quoted form...

Can't set <<class psxf>> "/Volumes/Disk/Path/to/file.ext" of Application "Finder".


If you cannot get rid of them, consider using:

set goodPath to POSIX file (do shell script "echo " & badPath)

That line won't execute. I get:

Can't set <<class psxf>> "/Volumes/Disk/Path/to/file.ext" of Application "Finder".
