Perish the thought. I read lots of really terrible student writing that has words spelled correctly, because spell check doesn't help one write. I see lots of homonyms in places where they shouldn't be, but they pass the spell checker. Spell checker is a writing assistant only in the most peripheral way.
One of my all-time favourites that passed spell check but was not what the writer intended was this sentence fragment, which appeared in a student report: "the buckets need to be testes to verify that they hold 2.5 litres". Of course they meant "tested". And after my wife revived me from the fit of laughter that had me literally rolling on the floor, I wrote in the margin of that paper "they must have come from a bull elephant". Couldn't help myself.
