There is Late Night Software's List & Record Tools osax (or anything you care to do with the AEM/OSA APIs), but if you have to use AppleScript and need to keep everything in the same context then, yes, fabbing a script object on the fly is the only way to do it that I can see. (And may the gods of AppleScript have mercy upon your soul...:p)
